just some random shots

January 2, 2008 - Hackensack, NJ. Red-nosed VW in the parking lot of Target. I'm sure I could have found a better composition for this subject. You can barely see the antlers. Man, do people go nuts for Christmas.

January 4, 2008 - 175th Street station of the New York Subway system. This far north, I think only the "A" train comes to this station. It's where I go to/get off because it's where the George Washington Bridge is. I take a bus to cross the bridge, or sometimes walk. Why am I talking in the present tense?

iTunes soundtrack:
1. Trimmed and Burning (Built to Spill)
2. Vigil (Fish)
3. Pale (Kristin Hersh)

December 20, 2007 - 42nd Street station, 8th Avenue line, New York City. I take the "A" train in New York. But not because I'm going to Harlem, which is what I assume is the significance in the Duke Ellington song, but because I come from much lamer New Jersey. My, but this lomo makes New York subways look clean. They're not.

iTunes soundtrack:
1. And God Created Whales (Hovhaness)
2. You're Gonna Get Yours (Public Enemy)
3. Melt the Guns (XTC)
4. Driver 8 (R.E.M.)

January 6, 2008 - AIX Bistro on the Upper West Side, New York City. There's a jazz combo playing in this long exposure.

I'm down in Kaohsiung now, where I have legitimate internet and "The Sopranos" on a functioning cable line. Makes me think I'll get TV and internet once I get back to Taipei. It was nice not having them, but let's get real, yo'm sayn? Come on, I missed two episodes of "The Sopranos". That just won't do.

Tomorrow's the Presidential election here. Should be interesting to say the least.

iTunes soundtrack:
1. Social Studies (David Byrne - "Music for the 'Knee Plays'")
2. Ain't Nobody Home (B.B. King)

January 8, 2008 - Edgewater, New Jersey. This must have been a dock on the Hudson River, across from New York City. Now apartments and condos and a multi-plex behind me.

I still don't have internet at home. I'm posting from a bagel shop that under Taipei Main Station that happens to get someone's wireless. Too bad this isn't near where I live. I still have to look for a place near where I live that gets free internet.

I totally love my new place and the neighborhood. I can't believe I had qualms about moving, everything is so much better, even the slightly longer distances to every where. At least there are places to go now. Here's a pic of my new place. It's a photostitch panorama, a nifty feature of my new Canon SD870 (I think, I mostly know it by its Asian model number).

I'm going to Kaohsiung next Friday for a few days. I should have internet down there for those few days. And I might crack any day now and have internet installed.

iTunes soundtrack:
1. Who Needs Information? (Roger Waters)

December 20, 2007 - Bryant Park skating rink, New York City. It feels like about this cold in Taipei now, but really it's only 56 degrees. Inside! I'm pretty sure this is unusually cold in Taipei, even for Winter, and it's as cold as I've felt here. At the store today I saw a lot of people buying ceramic space heaters. I was buying Scotch. Someone left a space heater in my apartment, so I have one, but I already have a dehumidifier running most of the time to keep the ceiling from dripping. I only want to imagine what a space heater would do to my utility bill.

New York in Reds

July 27, 2007 - New York City West Side. Piles and piles of salt, used for melting snow . . . in the middle of the Summer. OK, I have no idea what this is.

Hudson River - I think those are fire department related, used for fighting fires . . . in the middle of a river. OK, I have no idea what those are for.

car vs. bike

July 30, 2007 - Driving on Route 4 East in Paramus on my last day in New Jersey before leaving for Taiwan that night. Weird being in one place at one time, suddenly you're in another at another time.

July 27, 2007 - New York City, West Side Riverside Bikeways, they have cute little bicycle streetlights that most people seem to ignore. They're more cautionary than mandate it seems. I try to obey them, seeing as they put so much effort into making all those cute little bicycles. They're really high, though, I was stretching my arm all the way up trying to get the bicycle in the shot.

iTunes soundtrack:
1. Icarus (Borne On Wings of Steel) (Kansas)
2. Get 'Em Out By Friday (Genesis)

view from my brother's apartment

July 25, 2007 - Fort Lee, New Jersey, the view from my brother's apartment looking north of the view-obstructing building, with the George Washington Bridge in view. . .

...and the view south of the view-obstructing building, looking across the Hudson River to New York City. The apartment is pretty cool. Whenever they drive into New York, they pull out the binoculars to check the traffic situation.

street shots

October 11, 2006 - Back in Philadelphia for the second time that week, this time with my parents and uncle and aunt who wanted to see the new baby girl, Sarah, who was born in July. My brother and his wife were at work, so I didn't see them at all. My parents like to visit on Wednesdays, their day off, but they only go to see the kids and never see my brother. That always struck me as odd.

I didn't want to hang out with a bunch of old people speaking Taiwanese, so I took off on a walk and to study at Starbucks, and ended up in the rain. I think this is Chestnut Street, headed back over the Schuykill River.

October 14, 2006 - West Side Highway, New York City. I drove into New York on Saturday morning to pick up my sister-in-law's sister, Peggy. I was in the lane to get off when I saw this darndest thing, and you probably have to enlarge to see it, a Corvette with "Student Driver" in huge letters on the back! I always thought East Coast people took themselves too seriously to do something like that. Or maybe it really was a student driver. Or a student race car driver.

iTunes soundtrack:
1. Bullet With Butterfly Wings (Smashing Pumpkins)
2. Alarmed (Built to Spill)
3. Yo-Yo (The Kinks)
4. Vera (live) (Pink Floyd)

Northern Exposure

October 10, 2006 - From the west side of the Empire State Building, shooting north, so Times Square, Upper West Side, the Hudson River and New Jersey are all in this shot. Although I doubt the George Washington Bridge is, even enlarged. My parents and brother live across the bridge.

Looking due north. No airplanes, fortunately.

Empire State Building Observation Deck.

October 10, 2006 - Fortunately, I was included in one "group blog", now defunct, that hasn't been migrated to the new blogger interface, so I can use that to upload lomos in the old format that fits to the screen. Although I must say those huge lomos have incredible detail! It's almost worth having to scroll around to see everything in the image... but not.

more 紐約 panoramics

October 10, 2006 - looking due west across the Hudson River at New Jersey. The New Yorkers view of the world.

Looking south and a bit east, across the East River towards Brooklyn.

Urg, anyone know why the new Blogger interface is not creating an image that fits to the screen when enlarged?

New York, New York, it's a helluv town

October 10, 2006 - U.S. East Coast trip. The reason I decided to go to the U.S. in October was because my uncle was going, and he's been really nice to me in Taiwan, so I thought it would be a nice gesture to take him around. I had to go to the U.S. anyway at some point for visa reasons. This shot is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Central Park. Unfortunately, this is the only lomo I have in the museum, as I've mentioned, Bebe is not so good indoors and in low light. It's in one of the Asia themed rooms, as you can see at the bottom the Asian type tiles replicating a roof.

Afterwards we went to the Empire State Building. This is looking northwest at the East River and off to Long Island.

Smorgasborg, bunch o' random pics

January 22, 2006 - New Jersey inspection sticker, good for two years! Sweet. I was thinking of a Peter Gabriel album cover for this. Or not.

My brother's building in Fort Lee. It was cold that day. We were going into the city for my sister-in-law's sister's "flat screen film festival".

I don't get into New York nearly as much as I should. But geez, is there much else to shoot except buildings?

Fifth Avenue

December 28, 2005 - post-Christmas hanging out with my brother's in-laws in New York. My brother's in-laws are awesome. They've been great to me and they've been so helpful to me in various things since my brother married into their family that I don't know what I'd be doing if he hadn't!

Fifth Avenue was really crowded, not surprisingly. It was a miracle that we were all able to stay together. I just held up Bebe and shot.

Dated pics.

Oy, this will really date how long ago these lomos are from.

Driving across the George Washington Bridge. I know I have other shots like this, and likely to have more shots like this, but I can't help it. As long as they prohibit camera use on bridge, I'm going to keep wanting to use my camera on the bridge.

We were driving to Peggy's on the upper west side. She was cooking:

Straight scan.

For Thanksgiving:

Past Roll Redux , pt. 3

October 11, 2005 - Another version of this was posted before. This wasn't. In Manhattan with my sister-in-law.

October 14, 2005 - Attempt at enhancing a low-light shot during rain in my parents' backyard. I didn't post it before because of the obvious low quality, but it's neat in its own way for a review.

October 15, 2005 - Sunset from my room at my parents' house. Hm, not sure why this didn't get posted before. Didn't fit my aesthetic back then? Whatever.

More past roll revisits:

I wondered if there were any other lomo shots from past rolls that I missed. There were!

October 6, 2005 - 168th Street in Manhattan. My sister-in-law's sister had a weekly DVD screening since she got this fab flat screen TV. Passing the parking garage next to her building, I whipped out Bebe and shot.
