goodbye to all that

December 16, 2006 - Daan Park footbridge, intersection of Heping East Road and XinSheng South Road. I return the keys to my old apartment today. I haven't found my new "default" shots around Jingmei yet.

As long as I'm up in my old neighborhood today, I get to meet with . . . oh, I don't think I've been chronicling that bit of drama here. It's just that several weeks ago, my best friend announced she was going back to Korea, but now it might be that she can stay. She writes all her text messages in Chinese so I can never be sure I understand her quite right, but I'll find out today.

iTunes soundtrack:
1. National Health (The Kinks)
2. Nothing Compares 2 U (Sinead O'Connor)
3. Kaila Speaks (Victor Wooten)
4. Alicia's Song (The Aislers Set)
5. Love For Sale (Talking Heads)
6. Stroking the Moon (Deadweight)
7. My Sky (Idiot Box)
8. Pilcher's Squad (Primus)
9. Another Hundred People ("Company" - Sondheim)
10. Ailes Grises ("Haibane Renmei")

and more Taida campus!

December 15, 2006 - No idea what this is, but it was such a shock of bright orange on a(nother) gloomy, rainy day. These might have something to do with sciences. Taida is Taiwan's leading university, so a good deal of research in all fields goes on here. My imagination thought it might be something for marine sciences. I'm pretty sure the atomic research building is elsewhere.

December 12, 2006 - Royal Palms Drive, looking at the main library. This is an attractive view to make it a default shot, but I'm not sure there would be enough different from shot to shot to make it interesting. In case I do, I did mark a location to make sure I took it from the same place. It's on the road where the surface switches from concrete to asphalt.

iTunes soundtrack:
1. Kipenda Roho (Orchestre Super Matimila & Remmy Ongala)
2. Leslie (764-HERO)
3. Indiscipline (King Crimson)
4. Assata's Song (Paris)
5. Cool Water (Talking Heads)
6. Just Blues (Kenwood Dennard)
7. Sick Again (Led Zeppelin)
8. Floyd the Barber (Nirvana)
9. Free ("A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" - Sondheim)
10. Diary of a Madman (Ozzy Osbourne)

Daan Park footbridge default shot

November 8, 2006 - And to start a New Year with my fisheye lomo default shot. Wherever I live, I try to find a default shot. A scene I take over and over until I have a collection of shots of the scene at different times. My official default shot is actually from on the footbridge, but I ended up taking this scene so often waiting for the light to change going to school, it has now become my fisheye lomo default shot, even though my new school is in the opposite direction. Happy New Years to all. Have a safe one.

iTunes soundtrack:
1. Shangri-La (Versus - (Kinks cover))
2. I Remember the Sun (XTC)

Default shot

August 7, 2006 - My lomo fisheye default shot of the Daan Park footbridge, from the northeast corner of Heping East Road and Xinsheng South Road. I love how the fisheye can get all four spans of the footbridge, albeit uneven in this shot.

3. Ruby My Dear (Thelonius Monk)
4. David Watts (The Kinks)
5. Do the Evolution (live) (Pearl Jam)

Daan Park footbridge (Taipei, Taiwan) study II

Well, it's not really a study. A study implies putting some thought into it and coming up with something new, different, or interesting. These are just shots of the footbridge that happened to be on this roll:

June 22, 2006 - Looks like on my way to school, so it's about 10 in the morning. The edge of the bike basket on the bottom tells me this was the P.O.S. Enterprise, my first bike. Riding my bike to school shortens my 10 minute walk to about a 3 minute ride. Shooting from the southeast corner.

Shooting from the northeast corner - the corner I mostly shoot from with Bebe.

See, different day, same northeast corner. Later in the afternoon with the sun in the western sky.

iTunes soundtrack:
1. (I Was Born In A) Laundromat (Camper Van Beethoven)
2. Blue Angel (Marillion)
3. Brimful of Asha (Cornershop)
4. Hard Time (Phase II Steelband Steel Orchestra)
5. Jets (Blur)
6. Lounge Act (Nirvana)
7. Bli-Blip (Duke Ellington)
8. A Little Bit of Good ("Chicago")
9. Change It (live) (Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble)
10. Day By Day ("Godspell")

Daan Park footbridge (Taipei, Taiwan) study I

June 13, 2006 - Daan Park footbridge default shot. This is the point of view I shoot periodically, so that I eventually I have a whole series of shots from this same point of view. This is the lomo fisheye version.

For some reason I have a bunch of shots on this roll taken on or around the Daan Park footbridge. The above shot is from the southwest corner looking east along Heping East Road. If you walk halfway down the span on the right and turn left, looking north, you get this:

June 20, 2006 - Xinsheng South Road. South road, but looking north, so you're looking north on the South Road. Think about it, there's something deep about it. Or not.

And if you walk all the way down the span and turn left, you see this, with or without the guy there:

This is also looking north, obviously. Undated. I think I've decided to use mostly the commercial scans of this roll. The sharpness of their scans is winning me over, although since their scans aren't full-frame, if anything I really want gets cropped out, I'll use the home scan. The crops are minimal, but I'm picky like that.

iTunes soundtrack:
1. Achilles Last Stand (Led Zeppelin)
2. When We Was Fab (George Harrison)
3. Sea to Sea (Matisyahu)
4. Spika (Shina Ringo)
5. I Want to Play for Ya (Stanley Clarke)
6. Hide and Seek (Dreams Come True)
7. (New Wave) Polly (Nirvana)
8. Making Flippy Floppy (Talking Heads)
9. You Might Think (The Cars)
10. Hellbound (The Breeders)

Daan Park footbridges

I didn't intend this to be a default shot (a scene I shoot repeatedly at different times), but there it was on April 12 (previous post), and it showed up twice on a roll I just got developed, so maybe it should be a default shot. Always the northeast corner.

My favorite footbridge (again)

April 12, 2006 - Footbridge at the intersection of Heping East Road and Xinsheng South Road. I love how the fisheye makes it look like it's not a square. I've found other footbridges that link all four corners of an intersection. I have to make a mental note to shoot them. None of them have the character of this one.

iTunes soundtrack:
1. Happiness Is A Warm Gun (The Beatles)
2. Séquelles (MC Solaar)
3. New York (U2)
4. Thought I Was (Rainer Maria)
5. Soul Mining (The The)

Taipei, Taiwan

March 3, 2006 - Yea, so I'm in Taiwan now. I just got this roll developed and there are still pre-Taiwan shots that I'll get to, I'm sure, but since I'm in this new place, I thought I'd start posting of the new place.

This is an elevated footbridge connecting all four corners at the intersection of Heping East Road and Xin Sheng Road. It's less than half a block from where I live, and I use it almost everyday to get to school (studying Mandarin). That wee spire in the distance is the Taipei 101 building, currently the tallest building in the world, to be superceded in several years by a taller building in Shanghai, which might be superceded by the replacement building at the World Trade Center site in New York, but at the rate it's going, that won't be completed until terrorists win the war on terror.

If you've seen the movie Yi Yi, there is a shot of this footbridge in one scene.

I'm pretty sure this is a roll of expired Fuji Superia film because the whole roll has an "interesting" quality to it.

iTunes soundtrack:
1. The Sound of Business (David Byrne)
2. Stay With Me (Melodie & 12 O'Clock)
3. No. 13 Baby (The Pixies)
4. Symphony No. 2, I. Adagio molto-Allegro con brio (Beethoven)
5. I Looked at You (The Doors)
6. The Ballad of Johnny Burma (Mission of Burma)
7. Speed of Life (David Bowie)
8. Pantomime (Engine Down)
9. Kayleigh (Marillion)
10. Old Old Song (Ani DiFranco)
